Solo travel builds confidence, flexibility and some of the best stories you’ll ever tell. With a few good habits, it’s also safe.

Staying safe

  • Share your plans. Send your itinerary and hotel details to someone at home, and check in regularly.
  • Arrive in daylight. Land and reach your accommodation before dark on the first day, when you know the least.
  • Keep copies of your documents. Store photos of your passport and insurance online, separately from the originals.
  • Trust your instincts. If a place or a person feels wrong, leave. You don’t owe anyone politeness over safety.
  • Protect your valuables. Use a cross-body bag, keep your phone away in crowded areas and never carry everything in one place.
  • Get travel insurance. It covers medical costs and cancellations, which matter more when you have nobody to help.

Making friends

  • Join a group tour. The easiest way to meet people is to travel with a small group and a guide, so you’re never really alone.
  • Take a class or tasting. Cooking classes, food walks and workshops put you next to people who share your interests.
  • Eat at shared tables. Markets and communal tables are friendly places to start a conversation.
  • Say yes. A coffee invitation from a fellow traveler can turn into the best day of your trip.

Solo travelers are welcome on our tours, and your guide looks after the group throughout. [A single-room supplement may apply, so ask us.] Tell us where you’d like to go and we’ll help you plan it.
